Guidelines for Selecting a Contractor

Having work done to your home is an important investment. Before you spend your money, spend some time learning how to evaluate the contractor who may be doing your home improvement work. Insist on working with a professional licensed contractor. You should get the results you expect-- quality work at a fair price.

All contractors are not alike. We recommend that you pre-qualify your contractor to get the job done right the first time. The follow guidelines are provided to help you get your home improvement project done successfully, and to build a better industry.

Guideline Checklist

  • Get at least three estimates from qualified contractors.
  • Ask the contractor for their state license number. Verify license status by calling the California Contractors State License Board at     1-800-321-2752.
  • Look for a company with a proven track record that readily offers client references and a list of completed projects. Call these clients to find out if they were satisfied.
  • Call your local better business bureau for any complaints that may have been filed.
  • Keep a healthy skepticism about the lowest bid. Good contractors do not work for free. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And your "possible Savings" can be a very bad experience, Remember, price is only one of the criteria for selecting a contractor. Professionalism and quality workmanship should also weigh heavily on your decision.
